How Drones Changed Yacht Photography and Video

Drone technology has transformed yacht photography and video. Before drones became part of professional productions, aerial images required helicopters or other complex solutions. Today, a drone allows us to add an aerial perspective to a yacht photoshoot quickly and efficiently, creating views that would otherwise be difficult to achieve.

A new perspective on the yacht

From the air, it is possible to show the complete proportions of a yacht, the relationship between its decks and the surrounding sea, and the way the vessel moves through the water. This perspective is particularly effective for underway photography, anchorage scenes and images that place the yacht within a destination.

Drone photography does not replace traditional photography from a tender or chase boat. Instead, the two approaches complement each other. Low angles from the water emphasise the profile and presence of the yacht, while aerial images provide scale, geometry and context.

Drone video and movement

For video production, drones have created even more possibilities. Following a yacht underway, revealing a bay from above or moving from the surrounding landscape towards the vessel can add scale and rhythm to a film.

These sequences help connect the yacht with the experience of cruising. They can also show exterior spaces, water toys and navigation in a way that is immediately understandable to the viewer.

One tool within a complete production

The drone is most effective when it is treated as one part of a complete visual production. At Yacht Photo Studio, we combine aerial photography with interiors, exterior decks, navigation, lifestyle and 4K film to create a coherent representation of the yacht.

Flight conditions, local regulations, wind and the position of the yacht always need to be evaluated before flying. When conditions are right, however, aerial imagery has become one of the most useful tools available to yacht photographers and filmmakers.
