How Long Does a Professional Yacht or Superyacht Photoshoot Take?

A professional yacht photoshoot can take anywhere from half a day to two full days or more, depending on the size of the yacht, its layout and the type of photography required.

A relatively simple 20-metre open yacht may be photographed in half a day. For yachts measuring 25 metres and above, however, we generally recommend at least one full day, starting in the morning and continuing until after sunset.

Superyachts sometimes require additional time, particularly when the production includes navigation, water toys, lifestyle photography and video.

At Yacht Photo Studio, the projects featured in our portfolio have generally involved at least one full day of photography. There is a simple reason: the quality of light changes throughout the day, and different areas of a yacht look their best at different times.

Can a yacht photoshoot be completed in half a day?

Yes. Some yachts can be photographed professionally in approximately half a day, particularly when they have a relatively simple layout and the production does not require extensive lifestyle photography.

Consider a 20–25-metre open yacht, such as a Mangusta 80, or a single-deck yacht without a flybridge. With fewer separate guest areas and exterior decks, the photographer can move between locations more quickly. If the yacht is properly prepared, a half-day production may be sufficient to photograph its principal interiors, exterior areas and overall profile.

However, completing a photoshoot in half a day means accepting a more limited range of lighting conditions. When the objective is to create a complete visual library, rather than simply document the yacht, additional time can still make a significant difference.

Why do we recommend a full day for yachts over 25 metres?

For yachts from approximately 25 metres upwards, our usual recommendation is to reserve a full day, from morning until after sunset.

This is not simply because larger yachts have more rooms. A yacht may have several exterior decks, dining areas, lounges and guest cabins, each facing a different direction. As the sun moves, some spaces become easier to photograph while others develop strong contrasts or unwanted shadows.

We therefore organise the shooting schedule around the light rather than photographing every space in a fixed order. Morning may offer excellent conditions for certain interiors and exterior areas. Other spaces may work better during the afternoon. Sunset and blue hour provide opportunities to photograph the yacht’s exterior lighting, atmosphere and evening settings.

A full-day photoshoot allows us to photograph each area when the conditions are most suitable, rather than simply when it is next on the list.

Can a superyacht be photographed in one day?

Yes. Even a large superyacht can sometimes be photographed in one full day, particularly when the production focuses on its interiors, exterior spaces and general presentation without extensive water toys or lifestyle sequences.

However, the size of a superyacht is not the only factor determining the schedule. A superyacht with several guest decks, numerous cabins, a beach club, gym, spa and multiple dining areas naturally requires more photographic coverage than a yacht with a simpler layout.

Navigation photography also requires additional coordination with the captain, particularly when a tender or chase boat and drone are involved. A well-organised crew, a clear shooting schedule and a yacht that is fully prepared before our arrival can make a significant difference to what can be achieved in one day.

When does a superyacht photoshoot require more than one day?

For a more complete superyacht production, particularly when water toys and additional activities are involved, we recommend allowing approximately 24 hours of production time, distributed across the most suitable shooting periods.

This does not necessarily mean spending 24 consecutive hours taking photographs. One option is to photograph the yacht from morning until after sunset on the first day, then return for an additional half-day beginning at sunrise. Alternatively, we may organise the additional session in the afternoon and continue through sunset, depending on the yacht’s orientation, location and the photographs still required.

This flexibility allows us to capture different lighting conditions without rushing the production. It also gives us more opportunities to organise navigation, tender photography, drone operations and water toys around the weather and the yacht’s operational schedule.

How long does a superyacht lifestyle photoshoot take?

When lifestyle photography is required, our recommendation is to plan approximately two days of production.

Ideally, we divide the work into two distinct phases. The first day is dedicated to photographing the yacht without guests or models. We concentrate on interiors, exterior decks, guest accommodation, architectural details and, where possible, navigation and aerial photography.

The second day focuses on lifestyle: guests or models enjoying the exterior decks, dining experiences, crew service, water toys, tender activities and other situations that communicate the experience of being on board.

These scenes require preparation, coordination and time. Separating lifestyle from the architectural photography helps us avoid compromising either part of the production. This approach is particularly valuable for superyachts intended for charter, where the photography must communicate not only the yacht’s design but also the experience available to future guests.

Why are sunrise, sunset and blue hour so important?

Light is one of the most important factors in professional yacht photography. The same yacht can look completely different at midday, during golden hour or shortly after sunset.

Early morning can provide calm conditions and soft light, making it particularly interesting for exterior and aerial photography. Sunset creates warmer tones and a different atmosphere across the exterior decks. Blue hour, immediately after sunset, is especially valuable when the yacht’s interior and exterior lighting becomes part of the composition.

These moments cannot simply be recreated by working faster. This is why our standard full-day production extends beyond sunset, and why additional sunrise or afternoon sessions can be so valuable for larger superyachts.

What determines the final shooting schedule?

Before confirming the production schedule, we normally coordinate with the yacht manager or captain to understand the yacht’s availability, location and operational requirements.

Weather is another important consideration. Calm conditions may be necessary for certain tender and water toys activities, while the direction of the sun influences when individual decks and interior spaces should be photographed.

We also need to establish whether the project includes photography only or a combination of photography and video. When both are required, the production schedule must accommodate different compositions, camera movements and additional sequences.

The objective is to organise these activities efficiently without compromising the quality of the final material.

How much time should you book for a professional yacht photographer?

As a practical guideline, a small open or single-deck yacht with a simple layout may require approximately half a day. From around 25 metres, we generally recommend one full day. A superyacht without extensive lifestyle or water toys can sometimes be completed in one full day. A complete superyacht production with additional activities may require approximately 24 hours of production distributed across suitable sessions, while a superyacht with dedicated lifestyle photography is better planned over approximately two days.

These are guidelines rather than fixed rules. The final schedule should always reflect the individual yacht, the required deliverables and the available shooting conditions.

For clients considering a professional yacht or superyacht photographer, our advice is simple: plan the production around the images you need and the light required to create them, rather than trying to fit every yacht into the same schedule.

A properly planned photoshoot provides a stronger and more versatile visual library for yacht sales, charter marketing, websites, brochures and social media.
